Prometheus

Our Scientists

We draw on a group of experts in applied mathematics and engineering from academia, industry, and career military/civilian U. S. Department of Defense resources.

Their experience lies in computational group theory, mathematical and computational optimization, adaptive control theory, harmonic analysis, waveform design, estimation theory and other fields of applied mathematics.

Most company scientists are independent contractors employed on a work-available basis. This structure has served our customer base extremely well since our incorporation in 1983. It has proven to be a cost-effective method of matching the highest-caliber resources to each project.

In the course of improving defense systems, acquisition efforts, and medical imaging, our scientists have published more than five hundred peer reviewed articles and created several patents and exclusive algorithms.

Prometheus Inc. International Research & Conference Center, Newport, RI

When you work with a team of Prometheus scientists, you will have top-level applied mathematicians focused on the specific problem of interest to you.

Myoung An

Myoung An has been a Principal Scientist at Prometheus Inc. since 1994. After receiving her PhD in Mathematics from the Graduate Center/CUNY, she has held positions both in industry and academia. Dr. An's main responsibility has been the application of mathematics in designing and implementing digital processing algorithms in fluid dynamics, computational electromagnetics, material sciences, crystallography, image processing and hyperspectral imaging. She has co-authored five books.

Dr. An's work as an Applied Mathematician at Prometheus concentrates on designing and tailoring waveforms and sequences for SAR, radar, and sonar applications. Her current research interests include information extraction using noncommutative harmonic analysis and time-frequency analysis. These techniques enable the novel exploitation of features in data that are ignored when standard signal processing methods are used.

Jim Byrnes

Jim Byrnes, formerly Professor of Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts, has headed Prometheus Inc. since its inception in 1983. He is well known in the field of applied harmonic analysis. In addition to leading many significant applied mathematical efforts for the United States Department of Defense, Dr. Byrnes has organized and directed nine NATO Advanced Study Institutes. These intensive two-week courses bring together international experts from academia, government and industry to further development in the fields of digital signal processing, imaging and detection, wavelets and other areas at the intersection of mathematics and engineering.
